Old Dam Community Band 2011 history
First off…. Many thanks to John Powell who for many years provided The Band with his history updates. John has not played tuba with the concert band for several years but continues to play banjo with The Little Old Dam Band… our smaller Dixieland ensemble.
Overlooked in earlier band history comments…. In 2009, The Band organized a low brass (tubas, trombones, and euphoniums) ensemble and decided to call it BBQ for Big Brass Quartet. The group rehearsed on Thursday evenings at 7pm at Dan’s house and did several performances during 2009. The group continued through 2010 with several performances at local churches. The Big Brass Quartet met through 2010 and continues to practice and perform in 2011. A few players have come and gone but the ‘basic bunch’ remains… Wayne Fiester, Dan Schultz, Charlie Dewig, Dave McGill, and Gene VanStone.
The Little Old Dam Band continues to meet on Saturday at Dan’s house for practice when we’re not playing at a local nursing home.
January 4 – Regular rehearsals of The Old Dam Community Band resume at Castle South Middle School under the direction of Jerry Reese. The Band also meets at The Newburgh Ohio Township Central Library of the 4th Tuesday of each month… for either a public concert or a regular practice. The public is always invited when it be a rehearsal or a concert.
January 8 – The Little Old Dam Band played at Parkview Health Care. Jim Sermersheim is there recovering from heart surgery. Joe Harbert has stepped up to fill Jim’s shoes in the Little Old Dam Band and is doing a great job! (Note… Jim Sermersheim returned to the hospital on January 18th due to complications of his heart surgery and a stroke).
January 22 – On a humorous note… Mary Ann Decker ‘lost it’ on her way to Little Old Dam Practice and slid on the snow and took out some bushes by her condo. … in her Hummer!
February 12 – The Little Old Dam Band played before The Really Big Show at The Center.

July 3 – Our annual ‘fireworks concert’ was rained out. However… the food was already prepared so we moved inside The Old Lock & Dam Building (our former rehearsal hall) for our 4th of July picnic. It was an interesting sight with the storm/rain coming up suddenly and all the band members carrying the food up the ramp to the building. It looked like a troupe of ants!
